This means:

  • Clear and consistent leadership whilst engaging our employees
  • Transparency and improving our economic, environment and social contribution
  • Developing human potential and collaborating with those who share our vision locally and globally.

As one of the cornerstones of achieving our aim to become an industry leader in sustainability, we have set up a group wide Sustainability Steering Group to coordinate and drive this ambition forward.
This group will formulate and maintain our strategic direction in sustainability, encourage innovative initiatives which embed sustainability across all facets of our business and measure and report on progress in achieving our aims.

This group held its first meeting in November 2011.

Gearbulk sets CO2 emissions reduction target

Gearbulk has set itself a 2015 target to reduce its CO2 emissions intensity from 2010 levels by 20%.

For the last few years, we have been very focused on improving our energy efficiency and reducing emissions. Our extensive fleet renewal programme introducing larger, much more fuel efficient new buildings which offer economies of scale in place of our older vessels, combined with improved fleet performance monitoring and voyage optimisation and the use of retrofit energy reducing technologies have placed us over the half way mark in achieving this ambitious target.

Our CO2 emissions intensity is calculated in accordance with the International Maritime Organisations CO2 Index which may be defined as the ratio of mass of CO2 emitted per unit of transport work - grams of CO2 emitted to move one tonne of cargo one nautical mile.
